Establish a common, permitted scene
Use a non-explicit adult fantasy premise: a cartographer and a historian disagree about whether to reveal a hidden city. Give each character the same three facts: the map is incomplete, the city has requested secrecy, and a third party is following them. Over twenty turns, introduce a new letter that changes the historian’s motive. Ask later for a decision that respects the city’s request. Record continuity, voice and how much agency the character leaves to you.
Choose profiles with comparable detail. Character.AI’s broad character catalog can make discovery enjoyable, but a familiar fictional name with a generic opening is not necessarily a stronger writing partner. CrushOn’s genre-oriented roleplay page is a starting point, not independent evidence that every profile sustains a long arc. Test more than one character if the first is thin.
Read rules before investing time
Look at the current age and content rules for each provider. If you want a story that one service does not permit, choose a suitable venue rather than trying to circumvent filters. Keep all characters clearly adult, use original or authorized identities, and avoid sharing private real-world information. Check chat reporting, deletion and privacy settings before a multi-session project.
Plan and model access can also affect memory. Label the account tier used and check whether a longer-context option is available in the active product. Do not translate a paid-model result into a claim about a free account.
Decision
Character.AI is worth investigating for broad, policy-governed character discovery. CrushOn is worth testing for adult-oriented genre roleplay. The better long-form tool is the one whose permitted environment and available model preserve your canon over several sessions—not the one with a more dramatic first reply.
